After concluding that I have somehow managed to lose the ability to sketch i decided that it was time to take a break from the studio and go on a mini adventure to see what it is like to be a medical student for the day.
Taking the 73 bus from town up to the Ninewells Hospital and Dundee Medical School campus I was able to identify key points in the journey where creative input may be possible.
With a 10-20 minute bus journey required on top of a possible waiting time at various city-centre bus stops I initially began to think of the possibility of a small-scale design for use on transport. However once arriving at the hospital I began identifying more relevant areas such as the library, waiting rooms and forgotten spaces between corridors.
The school is much smaller than I had imagined but revolves around a large open area at the centre under a beautiful, large skylight - one of the only areas in the school providing natural light. I was pleased to discover an attempt at creative intervention via the means of large murals and inspirational quotes on the walls however there was a definite lack of anything interactive which could really engage the students or professors walking the halls.
Returning back to the studio inspired I set to work creating a little story board depicting ‘A day in the life of a Medical Student’ before highlighting the three main areas I could imagine placing my mobile space in.
