By harassing every medical student known between myself and my flatmates I was able to reach an astonishing 55 survey participants over the past two days.
Overwhelmed with the data collection I have set about analysing the findings by constructing an abstract graph/chart as seen below.
As Medical Schools are notorious for expecting the very finest of applicants it is often the case that students were very heavily involved in extra curricular activities such as sport or drama before moving to University to discover they no longer have the time or encouragement for such things. As a result many of the students find their creative side being crushed under the ever increasing weight of textbook regurgitation expect of them.
In the survey it was revealed that nearly all students saw the need for creativity and a creative mindset as a medical student and discussed different scenarios such as patient evaluation in which they saw this being a useful skill. In terms of factors which affect their creative ability there was a broad range of responses but ‘relaxation’ ‘collaboration’ ’nature’ and ‘play’ all came out on top.
Using this information I plan to research further into the benefits each element has previously been proven to provide and try to formulate a way in which I can combine these factors into a simple yet effective concept!
